AHS Jazz Combo (Jazz Ensemble B)

This is a developmental ensemble for high school players to continue their journey in the jazz program. Jazz Ensemble B is a place for anyone dedicated enough to make a commitment so they can keep honing their skills for future openings in the Eagle Big Band. Some years this group is big enough for a full second band with 18 members. It all depends on the year. Most of the recorded history of jazz is in groups of 4 to 10 musicians with varying instrumentation. These are called "jazz combos". We are embracing this format in Jazz B in 2023-2024. Instead of putting together complex arrangements, we are simplifying that side of things so we can focus on ensemble mechanics and improvisation. The spirit of improvisation and making things your own is at the heart of the artform. We are surveying jazz standards and a plethora of styles while always leaving room for a jam session.
